Hrithik Roshan yold he and his father Rakesh have a ‘difficult relationship’, mother Pinky had to intervene and say: ‘I complained a lot’

Although Rakesh Roshan is a loving person, Hrithik Roshan revealed that his father is still not adept at fully expressing his emotions.
Netflix’s latest documentary The Roshans has not only shed light on the lesser-known aspects of the careers of composer Roshan Lal Nagrath (popularly known as Roshan) and his successors, but also on their personal lives and the relationships between them.
During his appearance in the documentary, actor Hrithik Roshan also opened up about his relationship with his father, producer-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan.
Although Rakesh Roshan is a loving person, Hrithik revealed that his father is still not adept at fully expressing his emotions.
“My father has always been someone who is very loving. But his expression of love is the way he was taught in his childhood. I don’t think he got that kind of compassion and love from the world. So, he only learned to be hard on himself. And that’s how he expresses his love now. And, it’s often misunderstood,” Hrithik shared.
Recalling the time spent with the father-son duo while making Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, Hrithik’s mother Pinky Roshan said, “Every other day, I would go and ask Duggu (Hrithik), ‘How was your day? How is the shoot going?’ Sometimes, he would be very happy; but there were days when I found him a little sad sometimes.
When he was asked what happened, he eventually came out of it and told me that he wanted to do it (the scenes) in a different way. And papa said, ‘No, it’s okay.’ I used to listen to him and as a mother, I used to feel bad. So, I would go from his room to my room and talk to my husband and ask ‘what happened today?’ He would say, ‘He (Hrithik) doesn’t know anything. I am a director. I know how to make films.’
Rakesh said, “Me and Hrithik used to argue. He would say, ‘Dad, I will do it this way.’ I would say, ‘No, Duggu, it won’t look good. Do it this way.’ And I had to strike a balance because he is an actor as well as my son. He was in the same dilemma as I am his director and his father. So, we used to have arguments, but the results were positive.”
“I always looked at the glass as half full. So I complained a lot. I remember I didn’t do Raj’s colour-correction in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. I didn’t do his skin-correction for two or three scenes. Because I was handling it, and the foreign prints had already gone out. So I came to my father very upset that, ‘How can you let this go? This is so important.’
And that was the first time he responded to me. He turned to my mother and he said, ‘I am doing everything for him. And he is sitting here complaining.’ And that very night I found out that the house and the cars were mortgaged and how much was at stake,” Hrithik recalled.
