Thin but unwell: Understanding lean Polycystic Ovary Disease

Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD), a hormonal disorder affecting millions of women worldwide, is often misunderstood as a condition only impacting overweight women. However, experts warn that even slim or normal-weight women can suffer from “lean PCOD,” a medically recognized variant. According to the World Health Organization, up to 13% of women globally have PCOD, but nearly 70% remain undiagnosed.

Dr. Tejal Kanwar, a gynecologist, explains that PCOD is a complex hormonal and metabolic disorder influenced by genetics and insulin resistance, which can occur regardless of body fat levels. Symptoms to watch for include irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, hair thinning, fertility problems, and dark patches on the skin.

Management of lean PCOD focuses less on weight loss and more on hormone monitoring, a balanced low-glycemic diet, regular exercise, and stress control through yoga and adequate sleep. Severe cases require consultation with specialists.

“PCOD is not just about weight,” Dr. Kanwar stresses. “Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for better reproductive and metabolic health.”
