Sikkim man held for anti-government video, insulting Army

A 37-year-old man was arrested in Namchi for allegedly posting a video on social media that criticized the Indian government and made derogatory remarks about the Indian Army, raising concerns over potential threats to national unity and public order.

Identified as Komirul Haque, a resident of Namchi Bazaar and originally from Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, the man was taken into custody after the video—uploaded via a Facebook account named “Kamirul Kamirul”—surfaced online. The content blamed the Centre for a recent terror attack in Pahalgam and included statements deemed offensive to the armed forces.

Namchi Police registered an FIR (No. 15/2025) on April 28 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, citing Section 152 for endangering national sovereignty and Section 196(1) for promoting enmity. His arrest also falls under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), with Section 35 allowing arrest in serious offences and Section 170 enabling custody during investigations.

Authorities seized the mobile device used to upload the video and sent it for forensic analysis. Officials warned the public against sharing content that could incite unrest or undermine national institutions, adding that further investigation is underway to determine possible accomplices.
