Government schools in Sikkim will combine low-enrollment schools to maximize resources

The State Education Department of the Sikkim Government made a major announcement: beginning with the upcoming academic year, government schools with fewer students in a class will be combined with other schools with a respectable student body. The goal of this action is to give government schools throughout Sikkim high-quality instruction, cohort learning, and sufficient infrastructure.

Speaking to the media at the Tashiling Secretariat on Thursday, Sikkim Education Minister Raju Basnet revealed that there are 78 primary schools in Sikkim with fewer than ten pupils in each class, twelve junior high schools with fewer than twenty students in each class, and seven secondary schools with fewer than fifty students in each class. He added that the pupils attending these institutions will be transferred to nearby, high-quality government schools. Transportation and hostel amenities have also been taken into account. Additionally, the minister stated that the teachers in these institutions will be transferred to neighboring schools. However, Basnet made it clear that if these schools’ enrollment improves before the Christmas break, they won’t be combined with other schools.
