Sikkim CM inaugurates world’s largest Zang-dok-palri Temple, strengthens cultural heritage

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated the world’s largest Zang-dok-palri Temple at the Denjong Mindrolling Monastery on November 11, 2024. The grand event also included the consecration of the monastery, drawing people from across Sikkim and beyond. During his speech, CM Tamang emphasized the importance of this milestone for Sikkim and the entire Himalayan region, expressing pride in the temple’s completion despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Construction of the temple began in 2017 and persevered through the challenges to reach its inauguration.

“This is not just a significant moment for Sikkim, but for the world,” Tamang stated. “We are blessed to have such a beautiful and grand monastery here, and I feel fortunate to be part of this historic event.” Tamang highlighted his government’s focus on supporting the Sangha constituency, which he said had been neglected under the previous Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government. He noted that the current administration has allocated around ₹150 crore toward monasteries and religious institutions, with projects including guest houses in Bodh Gaya and new temple idols across Sikkim.

Under the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government, Sonam Lama, the representative from the Sangha constituency, was given a cabinet rank, furthering support for the region’s religious and cultural development. The inauguration coincided with National Education Day, honoring India’s first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Tamang reflected on Sikkim’s diverse culture, emphasizing the role of mutual respect and education in fostering unity.
