Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group has announced its foray into Bhutan, with ambitions to build 1,270 megawatts of solar and hydropower projects. This program includes the construction of Bhutan’s largest solar plant, a 500 MW facility dedicated to creating renewable energy and combating climate change. The project will be led by Reliance Enterprises, a newly formed business under Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Reliance Power Ltd, in collaboration with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd (DHI), Bhutan’s government’s commercial arm.
The agreement specifies the development of a 500 MW solar facility in Gelephu Mindfulness City, which will be completed in two 250-MW phases over the following two years. Harmanjit Singh Nagi, Reliance Power Ltd’s President of Corporate Development, and Ujjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of Druk Holding and Investments, inked the deal in the presence of Anil Ambani. Beyond energy generation, Reliance Enterprises will contribute to Bhutan’s infrastructure by constructing smart distribution and metering systems. “This initiative underscores Reliance Group’s long-term commitment to Bhutan and its renewable energy landscape,” the statement stated, tying the project to economic growth and Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness Index. With Bhutan’s current electricity capacity of 2,452 MW, the Chamkharchhu-1 project marks a key milestone in the country’s renewable energy growth.
Ujjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of Druk Holding and Investments, stated, “The partnership between Reliance Enterprises and Druk Holding leverages both organizations’ strengths in the areas of green energy and development.” Reliance Power, with an installed capacity of 5,340 MW, and Reliance Infrastructure, which is involved in energy distribution and infrastructure projects, are expanding their green energy presence. This new endeavor in Bhutan reinforces Reliance Group’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
