The Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has decentralized the Protected Area Permit (PAP) system. This change, in accordance with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s directive, aims to enhance access to popular tourist spots like Nathula Pass and Tsomgo Lake while promoting balanced development in the Namchi and Soreng districts. Starting September 24, 2024, district tourism offices will issue 50 vehicle permits daily for Nathula Pass. This new policy is set to reduce bureaucratic delays, making travel easier for both domestic and foreign tourists.
A key highlight is the introduction of ‘free Nathula Pass permits’ for domestic tourists who stay at least one night in registered hotels or homestays in Namchi and Soreng. Tourists can claim this by submitting hotel bills and other documents through local travel agencies three days prior to their visit, encouraging longer stays and engagement with local businesses.
Additionally, 33% of the daily permit quota is reserved for Namchi and Soreng tourists, with permits available on a payment basis. Foreign tourists can also obtain PAPs for scenic spots like Tsomgo Lake, Lachung, and Dzongu, provided they are accompanied by certified guides. This initiative aligns with Chief Minister Tamang’s vision of sustainable tourism, empowering local businesses and fostering economic growth in Sikkim’s scenic districts.
