To combat rising cybercrime and cyber fraud in Sikkim, the Gangtok District Police held a press conference on Monday. Senior Superintendent of Police, Tenzing Loden Lepcha, announced the initiative to hold bi-weekly press conferences aimed at educating the public about various cyber frauds prevalent in the state and methods to safeguard against them.
Lepcha emphasized that cyber fraud often exploits people through deceptive promises, leading to substantial financial losses. He disclosed that victims in Sikkim have reported losses ranging from 4 million to 40 million rupees due to such fraudulent activities. The chief factors contributing to the increase in cyber fraud cases, according to Lepcha, are greed and fear, with fraudsters enticing individuals with lucrative offers.
“The frequency of these incidents highlights the urgent need for awareness and vigilance among the public,” remarked Lepcha. He assured that the Gangtok District Police are committed to providing regular updates and tips to help citizens protect themselves from falling victim to cyber fraud.
