Siliguri, July 12: In a joint operation, the Detective Department (DD) and Medical Outpost police arrested two persons for trying to sell 1876 US trade dollars in Siliguri. The suspects, MD Sharfuddin (54) and Dipanjan Majumdar (48), both residents of Siliguri, were caught on Friday.
Reportedly, the accused had come from North Dinajpur and were staying at a hotel in Kadamtala under the jurisdiction of Siliguri Medical Post, where they intended to sell US trade dollars.
Acting on a tip-off, DD officials posed as buyers and contacted the suspects and recovered one 1876 US trade dollar during the operation. The accused were arrested for failing to provide valid documents for currency worth approximately Rs 75 lakh.
According to DD sources, the 1876 US trade dollar was historically used for trade transactions in various countries about 150 years ago. However, possessing or selling such currency is now a legal offence. Medical post police will present the accused in Siliguri court on Saturday.
