A significant landslide at the Karsingsa block point on Friday morning has prompted the Itanagar administration to close the road, citing safety concerns for commuters. However, residents are demanding swift restoration efforts, highlighting the inconvenience faced by schoolchildren and commuters who rely on this route between Assam and the twin capital towns.
The construction of a viaduct meant to serve as an alternate route to Banderdewa and Karsingsa towns from Itanagar is facing delays, exacerbating the transportation crisis. Scheduled for completion in August under package C of the four-lane highway project, several sections remain unfinished, adding to local frustrations.
Arun Yangfo, a resident of Karsingsa town, criticized the state government’s response, particularly regarding the earth cutting activities of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation for a proposed Solid Waste Management plant. He blamed these activities for aggravating the landslide, which has blocked multiple points instead of just one.
“We will protest against the administration and concerned departments if restoration work doesn’t commence promptly,” warned Yangfo, stressing the severe impact on daily commuters and emergency services.
Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta conducted an inspection of the site and ordered the road closure, diverting traffic via Gumto until further notice. She assured deployment of resources to clear blockades promptly and instructed the highway department and PWD to maintain readiness around the clock.
During her inspection, the DC also addressed multiple landslides along the state highway to Batt village and highlighted ongoing efforts to install an alternative water pipeline for Itanagar. Restoration work by the electrical department is also underway to ensure essential services are restored swiftly.
