In a pioneering move towards fostering gender inclusivity in schools across Northeast India, Reckitt, in collaboration with Plan India, has unveiled the Rainbow Classrooms initiative under its Durex The Birds and Bees Talk (TBBT) program. This initiative aims to transform educational environments into safe and inclusive spaces by promoting comprehensive gender identity education and vibrant, rainbow-colored classroom doors.
The program, supported by the Government of India and aligned with the National Curriculum Framework, introduces India’s first gender diversity course designed for teachers. This course equips educators with essential tools and knowledge to support students on gender-related issues effectively. Gaurav Jain, Executive Vice President of Reckitt – South Asia, emphasized the initiative’s significance in creating supportive educational environments: “The Rainbow Classrooms initiative marks a pivotal step in our commitment to fostering acceptance and respect in schools. By empowering teachers and enhancing school spaces, we aim to nurture a culture of inclusivity that positively impacts students’ lives.”
Under this initiative, engaging activities including painting competitions and workshops on gender equality will be conducted across Sikkim, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. Asif Mohammed, Executive Director of Plan International (India Chapter), highlighted the initiative’s broader impact: “The Rainbow Classrooms initiative not only rewards inclusive schools but also lays the groundwork for a more equitable society where every student can thrive.”
