In a determined stride towards a drug-free future, Sikkim has launched the “Nasha Mukt Sikkim” initiative, spearheaded by Samdup Lepcha, the Minister of Women and Children Development. At an event organized by the Social Welfare Department, Minister Lepcha underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to combat drug abuse in the state. Highlighting Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s visionary leadership, Minister Lepcha expressed the administration’s steadfast dedication to realizing the ambitious goal of a drug-free Sikkim. “This initiative is a noble step towards Chief Minister Tamang’s big dream for our state,” he emphasized, crediting the Chief Minister’s guidance and vision as pivotal in driving the initiative forward.
Emphasizing the crucial role of community participation, Minister Lepcha stressed that while political will initiates actions, it is collective societal effort that will bring about significant change. “Preventing the catastrophe of drug abuse requires the concerted effort of every citizen,” he asserted. Acknowledging the vital contributions of law enforcement agencies, Minister Lepcha praised their rigorous efforts in cracking down on drug trafficking and consumption. “Our police personnel are pivotal in our mission to achieve a drug-free Sikkim,” he affirmed.
Education was highlighted as a cornerstone in the fight against drug abuse, with Minister Lepcha underscoring the pivotal role of teachers in educating young minds about the dangers of drugs. “Teachers are instrumental in fostering awareness and shaping the future generation,” he noted. Recognizing the indispensable role of NGOs and associations, Minister Lepcha called for continued support from these entities in raising awareness and implementing preventive measures across communities. “NGOs and associations play a critical role and their ongoing efforts are essential,” he said.
