Dorji Thinley Bhutia, a resident of Tathangchen, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the District and Sessions Court in Gangtok, along with additional fines, for his involvement in the murder of Dr. Sanjay Upreti and the attempted murder of a female employee of STNM Hospital in December 2021Convicted under sections 302, 307, and 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by Judge Jyoti Khadka of the Special Division 1 of the District and Sessions Court, Dorjee Thinley Bhutia received a life sentence with a fine of Rs 10,000 for IPC 302 (murder), ten years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 1,000 for IPC 307 (attempt to murder), and one year of imprisonment for IPC 353 (assault on a government employee or public servant).
The incident occurred on December 14, 2021, when Dorjee Thinley Bhutia entered the STNM Hospital and assaulted a female employee with whom he had a personal grudge. Dr. Sanjay Upreti, a renowned cardiologist, intervened and was stabbed, resulting in the amputation of his leg. Dr. Upreti succumbed to his injuries on December 24, 2021.Addressing the media, Additional Public Prosecutor Yadhav Sharma expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating that he had advocated for rigorous imprisonment and significant fines for the convict.
Sharma emphasized his effective and sincere efforts as a Public Prosecutor, believing that justice has been served.When questioned about the possibility of an appeal, Sharma confirmed that the convict retains the right to file an appeal before the Honorable High Court if dissatisfied with the judgement.
