Sikkim has emerged as a coveted destination for international travelers, witnessing a remarkable surge in foreign tourist arrivals over the past five years. Data released by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of the Government of Sikkim unveils a staggering influx of 661,248 foreign visitors from 2019 to 2024, painting a picture of escalating tourism in the region. The statistics depict a notable increase in foreign tourist arrivals compared to previous years, with Sikkim welcoming 133,388 foreign visitors in 2019 alone, marking the beginning of a steady upward trend. Despite the hurdles posed by the global pandemic in 2020, including international travel restrictions and a downturn in global tourism, Sikkim managed to attract 19,935 foreign tourists, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity.
Subsequent years witnessed a remarkable recovery and growth in foreign tourist arrivals, with the state hosting 11,508 visitors in 2021, followed by a significant surge in 2022, as 68,645 foreign tourists explored the scenic beauty and cultural heritage of Sikkim. The momentum continued to soar in 2023, with 93,908 foreign arrivals reaching a peak before tapering off slightly in 2024, with 33,864 visitors. However, amid the surge in foreign tourist arrivals, it’s crucial to assess the dynamics of domestic tourism within the state. From 2019 to 2024, domestic tourist inflow in Sikkim exhibited fluctuating patterns, influenced by various factors, including the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).
During this period, domestic tourism in Sikkim witnessed a total of 1,321,169 visitors. The summer months of May and June traditionally attracted a significant number of domestic tourists, while the winter season also saw considerable footfall, particularly during festivals and cultural events, highlighting Sikkim’s allure as a year-round destination for travelers both domestic and international.
