Sikkim advocacy group pushes for new state holidays and infrastructural development

The Sikkimese Moolniwasi Suraksha Sangh has advocated for the declaration of two new state holidays, marking significant dates in the region’s history. This proposal was put forth during a commemorative event held at Chintan Bhawan, coinciding with the celebrated 8th May Agreement Day of 1973. The 8th May Agreement Day commemorates a pivotal moment in Sikkim’s history, signifying its merger with India and the subsequent establishment of the Sikkim Assembly in 1974. The Sangh honored this milestone by felicitating nearly 50 Sikkim Scout officials during the event. Ratnalal Sapkota, President of the Sikkimese Moolniwasi Suraksha Sangh, emphasized the agreement’s significance in shaping the region’s cultural and political identity. He underscored its role in formulating key provisions such as Article 371F and Rule 4(4) of the Sikkim Government Establishment Rules, 1974.

In addition to honoring the 8th May Agreement, the Sangh proposed the declaration of 4th April as a state holiday, commemorating the birthday of Late Chigual Paladen Thundup Namgyal. Sapkota suggested reallocating one day from the existing Loosong Namsson holiday to accommodate this tribute. Namgyal, a prominent figure in Sikkimese history, played a crucial role in shaping the region’s socio-political landscape.Sapkota highlighted the significance of establishing new state holidays as a means of preserving cultural heritage and acknowledging the contributions of visionary leaders.

Furthermore, the Sikkimese Moolniwasi Suraksha Sangh advocated for the recognition and development of Basant Kumar Road, extending from Palace Gate to Dukit Paan Dokan. The group emphasized the road’s importance in enhancing connectivity and accessibility for the people of Sikkim. Among their key demands, the Sangh urged authorities to provide adequate medical facilities for approximately 270 guards serving in various capacities. Recognizing the sacrifices made by these guards, the Sangh emphasized the importance of prioritizing their well-being and ensuring access to essential healthcare services.
