Livestock awareness takes center stage, World Veterinary Day celebrated with calf rally in Soreng district

The Government Secondary School playground in Hattidhunga, Sanga-dorjee GPU, buzzed with activity as a day-long block-level awareness program on livestock diseases took flight on the eve of “World Veterinary Day.” Under the theme “Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers,” the event aimed to enlighten farmers about critical diseases like PPR, FMD, and Brucellosis. Attended by esteemed dignitaries including Panchayats from Sanga-Dorjee GPU, Dr. Kishore Thapa, Additional Director of AH&VS Department, and officers from AH&VS Soreng, the event drew a crowd of 70 farmers and 31 enthusiastic participants for the Calf Rally from various villages of Kaluk block, Soreng district.

Panchayat President of Sanga-Dorjee GPU expressed gratitude for the insightful program, urging farmers to actively engage in departmental initiatives for mutual benefit. Dr. Thapa illuminated the significance of World Veterinary Day, highlighting departmental schemes like PPIS and vaccination drives, while commending participants for their involvement in the Calf Rally. He pledged continued efforts to reach remote areas with similar programs. Dr. Sharin Gurung conducted an enlightening presentation on livestock diseases, emphasizing control and management strategies through a visually engaging PPT.

The highlight of the event was the Calf Rally competition, featuring 31 calves judged on various parameters such as pedigree, body conformation, and general health. Birkha Bdr Gazmer clinched the top position, followed by Sahil Subba and Sandesh Sharma. Winners were rewarded with cash prizes, with all participants receiving encouragement in the form of mineral mixtures and de-wormers to promote scientific livestock rearing. The event not only celebrated the invaluable role of veterinarians but also empowered farmers with knowledge and resources for healthier livestock practices.
