In a proactive move to preserve the natural allure of Sikkim’s urban areas, the State Government has issued a stern directive to address the burgeoning issue of cable clutter. The Urban Development Department, operating under the auspices of the Government of Sikkim, has issued a public notice condemning the unauthorized use of flower pot stands as makeshift supports for utility service wires. The notice, bearing No: 741/UDD/Secy. and dated April 22, 2024, underscores the government’s ongoing endeavors in enhancing town aesthetics by embellishing public spaces with floral arrangements and decorative accents. However, recent observations have revealed a troubling trend where cables and utility wires are indiscriminately affixed to flower pot stands along highways and various other locations.
Expressing grave concern over this practice, the government emphasized that flower pot stands are ill-equipped to bear the weight and strain of utility service wires. Not only does this unauthorized usage compromise the structural integrity of beautification efforts, but it also detracts from the visual appeal of towns. All stakeholders, including service providers, cable operators, consumers, and individuals, have been issued a warning to promptly remove cables or utility wires from flower pot stands to prevent further defacement of public spaces.
Non-compliance with the directive will invite stringent actions from the department and Urban Local Bodies. Defaulters risk facing punitive measures, including the removal of cables at their own expense. Any costs incurred during such actions will be recovered from the concerned service providers, operators, and individuals involved.
