After participating in the state assembly elections by casting his ballot, Prem Singh Tamang, President of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and Chief Minister of Sikkim, exuded confidence in the party’s prospects, confidently stating that they are poised to secure all 32 seats. Tamang expressed gratitude towards the people of Sikkim for their continuous support and trust in the SKM government’s performance over the past five years. Speaking to the media after voting in Soreng, Tamang remarked on the unprecedented peacefulness characterizing the electoral process in Sikkim, highlighting a departure from past elections marked by controversies and unrest. He emphasized the historical significance of such peaceful elections.
Reflecting on the journey of the SKM party since assuming power in 2019, Tamang underscored the pivotal role of development initiatives in winning public approval. The government’s focus on sectors like education, healthcare, and employment has purportedly addressed longstanding grievances that had remained unattended for a quarter-century under previous administrations. Tamang commended the resilience exhibited by the SKM administration in confronting challenges, notably the disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite adversities, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tirelessly serving the people, a dedication that has earned the endorsement and satisfaction of the electorate.
Recalling the devastating flooding incident in October 2023, Tamang highlighted the SKM government’s response in providing relief and rehabilitation to affected communities. From immediate on-ground assistance to reconstructing homes for displaced families, the government’s proactive measures showcased a steadfast commitment to the welfare of Sikkimese citizens. Looking ahead, Tamang expressed optimism regarding the resurgence of Sikkim’s tourism sector, fueled by recent restoration efforts and the extension of the tourist season from six to twelve months. He anticipated a robust revival in tourism activities, promising economic prosperity for the state.
Tamang reiterated his allegiance to the ideology of the SKM party while acknowledging the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a formidable contender. Meanwhile, Sikkim Democratic Front chief Pawan Chamling also exercised his voting rights in Namchi, accompanied by his family. He later shared, “Today, by voting for the Lok Sabha and State Assembly Election, I have fulfilled my democratic responsibility in the interest of the people and my state.”
