North Sikkim to simplify permit process, empower local economy

In a groundbreaking move set to revolutionize tourism in North Sikkim, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, also known as Golay, announced today that all tourist permits for the region will soon be issued directly from Mangan. This significant decision, scheduled for approval in the first cabinet meeting after the Government’s formation in June 2024, promises to streamline travel logistics and benefit both tourists and local stakeholders alike.

Speaking at the Vijay Bhava Program in Naga, North Sikkim, Chief Minister Golay addressed the longstanding demand of tourism stakeholders for simplified permit procedures. Currently, tourists must obtain permits from Gangtok before journeying to Mangan, a process that often entails inconvenience and logistical challenges. “With the establishment of the new government in 2024, our top priority will be to centralize the issuance of tourist permits in Mangan,” declared Chief Minister Golay. “By establishing a permit center here, we aim to unlock new opportunities for local residents to invest in hospitality ventures and generate employment.”

The decision holds immense promise for Mangan, which has emerged as a burgeoning tourist hub witnessing a significant increase in visitor footfall. By simplifying the permit process and encouraging local entrepreneurship, the initiative aims to bolster tourism infrastructure and spur economic growth in the region. Taking inspiration from successful models like Ramman’s foreign checkposts, the government plans to establish a dedicated tourist center in Mangan.
