Alleged attack on Pawan Chamling by SKM supporters sparks outcry

Pawan Chamling, former Chief Minister and president of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), was reportedly attacked today in Namchi by supporters of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), allegedly orchestrated by Krishna Golay. According to eyewitness accounts, Shri Pawan Chamling was on his way to a scheduled meeting at Kishan Market after performing a puja at Namchi Bazar when he was intercepted by hundreds of SKM supporters. In a brazen display of aggression, they attempted to physically assault him and obstruct his passage.

Surrounded and outnumbered, Shri Pawan Chamling found himself at the mercy of the assailants, enduring a harrowing ordeal as they allegedly attempted to suffocate him. Despite the presence of law enforcement and bystanders, the situation escalated unchecked, leaving the former Chief Minister vulnerable and defenseless. Fortunately, supporters of the SDF intervened, pushing back the alleged attackers and preventing further harm to Shri Pawan Chamling.

However, the aftermath of the confrontation saw several SDF supporters, including women, subjected to brutal beatings, necessitating urgent medical attention. This egregious assault on democracy, wherein opposition candidates are targeted and endangered on a daily basis, is a stark reminder of the deteriorating political climate orchestrated by the actions of individuals like PS Golay.
