Sikkim Democratic Front announces ambitious manifesto under ‘Save Sikkim’ campaign

The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) reinvigorated its political stance with the release of its manifesto, setting a spirited tone for the upcoming elections in the Rangang-Yangang constituency. Led by former Chief Minister and SDF President Pawan Chamling, alongside prominent party figures such as Lok Sabha candidate PD Rai and assembly seat nominee MK Subba, the event showcased a vision brimming with promises aimed at bolstering Sikkim’s societal fabric. Central to their agenda is the resolute commitment to uphold Sikkimese rights enshrined in Article 371(F), encapsulated in their rallying cry, “Save Sikkim.” Championing gender equality, the SDF pledged groundbreaking measures, including a groundbreaking policy guaranteeing 50% reservation for women in government jobs and higher education. Chamling emphasized this as a crucial step towards gender inclusivity and empowerment, reflecting the party’s progressive stance.

Among the manifesto’s highlights are promises to provide dearness allowance to all government employees, reinstate the old pension scheme, and officially recognize indigenous communities like the Bhutia and Limboo as ancient tribes. The pledge to include all state languages in college and university curricula further underscores the SDF’s commitment to preserving Sikkim’s cultural heritage. To address economic concerns, the manifesto outlines ambitious plans, including elevating MGNREGA workers to regular government employees with improved wages and workdays. Additionally, the proposal to conduct job-related examinations biennially aims to streamline recruitment processes and ensure fair opportunities for aspirants.

The welfare of government employees features prominently, with promises to double salaries and declare all Saturdays as holidays. Furthermore, the SDF vows to safeguard the sanctity of Article 371(F), acknowledging its significance in preserving Sikkim’s unique identity and heritage. Chamling, a seasoned leader with five terms as Chief Minister, urged voters to exercise their franchise judiciously on April 19, stressing that the future of both individuals and the state hinges on their decisions. With the “Save Sikkim” campaign as their guiding ethos, the SDF seeks to usher in a new era of progress and prosperity for the people of Sikkim.
