In the upcoming second phase of the Assam Lok Sabha elections 2024, scrutiny revealed the rejection of three out of 65 nomination papers on Friday, as confirmed by an election official.
The rejected nominations comprised two candidates from Nagaon and one from Karimganj. However, nominations from Silchar (SC), Darrang-Udalguri, and Diphu (ST) were all deemed valid.
Of the total 65 candidates who filed their nominations on the final day, prominent contenders such as sitting Congress MP Prodyut Bordoloi, BJP’s Suresh Bora, and AIUDF’s Aminul Islam are vying for victory in Nagaon.
Meanwhile, in Karimganj, the independent candidate Biplab Das faced rejection, while 24 other candidates, including sitting BJP MP Kripanath Malla and Congress’s Hafez Rashid Choudhury, had their nominations accepted.
In Darrang-Udalguri, papers of notable candidates like sitting BJP MP Dilip Saikia and Congress candidate Madhab Rajbongshi were validated, along with those of Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF)’s Durga Das Boro and eight others.
For Silchar, all eight candidates, including state minister Parimal Suklabaidya of BJP, Surya Kanta Sarkar of Congress, and Radheyshyam Biswa of Trinamool Congress, saw their nominations approved.
Similarly, in Diphu (ST), all five nominations, including those of key contenders like Joyram Engleng of Congress, Jotson Bey of Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), and BJP’s Amarsing Tisso, were found valid.
The withdrawal of nominations can be made until April 8. In the first phase of polls on April 19, 35 candidates are contesting for constituencies like Kaziranga, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, and Lakhimpur. In the outgoing Lok Sabha, BJP held nine seats, Congress three, AIUDF one, and an independent candidate secured one from the state.
