Sikkim’s celebrated “Marathon Girl,” Phurba Tamang, has once more demonstrated her extraordinary endurance, claiming victory in the arduous Tsomgo Ultra Marathon for the third consecutive year. Crossing a daunting 75-kilometer course, Phurba blazed through the challenging terrain from Ganesh Tok in Gangtok to the picturesque Tsomgo Lake, triumphantly completing the race in an impressive 9 hours, 48 minutes, and 16 seconds. Amidst stiff competition, Phurba’s unwavering determination propelled her to the forefront, leaving her opponents trailing behind.
Soniya Rai and Divya Chettri, representing Darjeeling, clinched the silver and bronze medals, respectively, while Phurba Tamang continued her reign as the undisputed champion of the event. Hailing from Lingmoo in South Sikkim, Phurba Tamang has solidified her position as a dominant force in long-distance running, showcasing unparalleled dedication and resilience in every competition. Her remarkable success is a testament to her relentless training regimen and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Acknowledging the crucial role played by her coach, Basant Pradhan, Chief Coach under the Department of Sports, Government of Sikkim, Phurba expressed gratitude for his guidance and support throughout her journey. In recognition of her outstanding achievement, Phurba Tamang was bestowed with the prestigious winning medal and a cash prize of Rs. 35,000, symbolizing her triumph over adversity and her steadfast pursuit of athletic excellence.
