On Tuesday, Kundan Green Energy said that it has obtained a contract from the Sikkim Government to establish a 21 MW Hydropower plant at Rellichu. By 2026, the company hopes to have the project finished, according to a statement from Kundan Green Energy. The Rellichu hydropower project will significantly advance Sikkim’s goals for growth and energy production with its 21 MW of electricity output. Through the project, Kundan Green Energy’s total hydropower capacities – which currently stand at 104 MW, will increase to 125 MW.
According to Udit Garg, Director of Kundan Green Energy, 40% of India’s hydropower potential is found in the Northeast. Sikkim’s hydropower potential is evaluated at 8,000 MW at its highest point, with a stable base of 3,000 MW. Sikkim has enormous potential to produce hydroelectricity, with up to 29 authorized hydropower projects in various stages of construction and an installed capacity of 55 MW for small hydropower.” The project’s finances were not disclosed by the corporation.
