According to Samsung, 256GB SD Express microSD card samples are now being sent out. The business also announced that it has begun producing its 1TB UHS-1 microSD card in large quantities. The 1TB UHS-1 cards will be accessible in the third quarter of 2024, according to Samsung, while the Express microSD card will go on sale later this year.
Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Memory Brand Product Biz Team Hangu Sohn stated, “With our two new microSD cards, Samsung has provided effective solutions to address the growing demands of mobile computing and on-device AI.”

According to Samsung, the 256GB SD Express microSD card has a maximum read speed of 800 MB per second and a maximum write speed of 958 MB per second. The write speed shows how long it takes to save a file on a card, whereas the read speed shows how long it takes to open a file that is saved on a card. In contrast, Samsung claimed that its SD Express microSD card outperforms SATA SSDs (Solid State Drives), which have a sequential read performance of up to 560 MB per second, by a factor of 1.4. With read rates of up to 200 MB per second, conventional UHS-1 memory cards will be four times slower than the soon-to-be-released SD Express cards. According to Samsung, the 256GB SD Express microSD card includes Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology built in for performance and dependability, which helps the card maintain its ideal temperature even during extended use. Samsung hopes to provide storage options for devices that can run on-device artificial intelligence (AI) with its array of next-generation microSD cards. Storage capacity and speed will become essential requirements as AI features function less and less reliant on the cloud. AI operations requiring a lot of data to be executed, such as running models for AI picture synthesis directly on the device, will be easier to carry out on devices with quicker and greater storage capacity.
