DGCA slaps Rs 30 lakh fine on Air India over failure to provide wheelchair for elderly passenger who later died

The non-availability of a wheelchair at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport took a life of an 80 year old man. The man was travelling alongwith his wife in Air India flight AI-116 from New York to Mumbai.

The elderly man faced the unfortunate ordeal of walking approximately 1.5 km from the flight to the immigration desk due to the non availability of wheelchairs, despite both individuals having pre-booked the assistance, only the wife received one.

After looking into the matter, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken major step against Air India, imposing a significant financial penalty of Rupees 30 lakhs.
