In a scathing accusation, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has pointed fingers at the ruling SKM government, holding them responsible for obstructing the implementation of seat reservations for the Limboo-Tamang community in the state assembly.
Robin Tamang, Vice President of the SDF, addressed the press, attributing the delay in seat reservations to the SKM’s alleged interference. Tamang asserted that the SDF, under the leadership of former CM Pawan Chamling, had diligently prepared for the reserved seats, only for the process to be derailed by a last-minute Supreme Court case filed by the SKM party workers.
Tamang further criticized the SKM government for its failure to address the Limboo-Tamang assembly seat reservation issue, urging them to present a definitive formula for the 40-40 seat distribution as proposed by the SDF.
He highlighted Minister Sonam Lama’s previous promise to resolve the LT issue within 10 days if the SKM government came to power. However, Tamang lamented that five years have passed without any progress on the matter, with the government failing to provide a viable solution or even a formula.
Notably, despite the Limbu-Tamang communities being granted Scheduled Tribe status by the Indian government over two decades ago in accordance with the State Constitution, they are still awaiting reserved seats in the state legislative assembly.
