The Tenth Assembly of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly convened for its Seventh Session (Part-III) on February 12, marking a historic moment as the Education Department unveiled seven bills aimed at laying the groundwork for the establishment of new universities within the state. During the legislative proceedings, a total of seven bills were presented for consideration. Notably, the Education Department, led by Kunga Nima Lepcha, presented a diverse array of bills designed to enhance the educational landscape of the state. These bills included proposals for the establishment of Orchid University, Gurukul Vidhyapeeth University, Matrix Skilltech University, Duke International University, Sikkim Medical Science University, Management and Information Technology University, and Shri Rukmani Dwarkadhish University of Science and Technology.
Moreover, the assembly deliberated on legislative proposals concerning various other vital sectors. The Transport Department, under the leadership of Minister M. N. Sherpa, put forth the Sikkim Enlistment of Constructional Machineries and Equipments Bill, 2024, underscoring the government’s commitment to infrastructural development. In addition to these discussions, efforts were made to ensure the welfare of assembly members through amendments to bills related to pension and medical allowances, as well as proposals for civil court reforms and town planning initiatives.
In terms of financial matters, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who also serves as the Minister-in-Charge of the Finance Department, presented the First Supplementary Demands for Grants for the Financial Year 2023-24.
