Skill India’s Impact in Sikkim: Shital Tamang’s Journey to Entrepreneurship

The Indian government aims to achieve a Viksit Bharat by 2047 by empowering the NariShakti across industries. The Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is working to build a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, transitioning youth and women from job seekers to providers, and accelerating initiatives through its flagship scheme, PMKVY.

The motivational tale of Shital Tamang, founder of M/S Sikkim Handloom and Handicrafts, showcases the government’s commitment to skill development and employment through her passion for handloom. She received training under the Skill India Mission, showcasing the transformative power of skills and entrepreneurship. Starting in 2017 with a team of seven, she aims to create a sustainable future with eco-friendly practices. Today, she leads a team of twenty, providing employment and contributing to community development. Shital, has been recognized for her contributions to community development, sustainable practices, and quality craftsmanship.

Tamang, a woman with a monthly income of over Rs. 210,000, was honored at Republic Day celebrations for her skills and marketing talent by the Skill India Mission. She expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and MSDE for transforming her life and highlighting the 28% increase in female higher education participation over the past decade.
