Sikkim is experienced and received this year’s first Snowfall on 16th of January with snow accumulating upto 2 inches at several key places of the State, transforming the landscape into a picturesque winter wonderland.
The forecast had predicted a series of snowfall events, with the region experiencing flurries from 20th to 22nd December and again from 25th to 29th December in the previous year. The chilly embrace of winter continued into 2024, with snow gracing the state from 2nd January to 4th January and 8th January to 10th January.
While the snowfall adds to the enchantment of Sikkim, it also brings challenges. At least 900 tourists were stranded along the J N Road after heavy snowfall disrupted road communication, highlighting the impact on the tourism sector.
The best time to visit North Sikkim is typically from May to September when the weather is moderate. However, for those who wish to experience the magic of snowfall, December through February is the ideal period. It’s important to note that while the average temperature in Sikkim during winter ranges from 10°C to 4°C, it can drop to freezing at high altitudes, with some areas remaining closed due to the extreme conditions.
